Morphological Alternations at the Intonational Phrase Edge
نویسنده
چکیده
This article develops an analysis of a pair of morphological alternations in K'ichee' (Mayan) that are conditioned at the right edge of intonational phrase boundaries. I propose a syntax-prosody mapping algorithm that derives intonational phrase boundaries from the surface syntax, and then argue that each alternation can be understood in terms of output optimization (Mascaró 2007; Mester 1994). The important fact is that K'ichee' requires a prominence peak rightmost in the intonational phrase, and so the morphological alternations occur in order to ensure an optimal host for this prominence peak. Finally, I consider the wider implications of the analysis for the architecture of the syntax-phonology interface , especially as it concerns late-insertion theories of morphology The primary result is that late lexical insertion must occur at least as late as the construction of intonational phrases.

Melodic alternations in Spanish
This article describes how the tonal elements of two common Spanish intonation contours –the falling statement and the low-rising-falling request– align with the segmental string in broad-focus utterances differing in number of prosodic words. Using an imitation-and-completion task, we show that (i) the last stressed syllable of the utterance, traditionally viewed as carrying the ‘nuclear’ acce...
متن کاملThe Intonation of Gapping and Coordination in Japanese: Evidence for Intonational Phrase and Utterance
In previous studies of Japanese intonational phonology, levels of prosodic constituents above the Major Phrase have not received much attention. This paper argues that at least two prosodic levels exist above the Major Phrase in Japanese. Through a detailed investigation of the intonation of gapping and coordination in Japanese, we argue that each syntactic clause projects its own Intonational ...
متن کاملIntonational phonology and prosodic hierarchy in malay
This paper presents original data in support of a new model of intonational phonology for Malay as spoken in Singapore. Building on the Autosegmental-Metrical approach (Beckman & Pierrehumbert, 1986), we propose that intonational variation in Malay can be explained in terms of underlying sequences of abstract tonal units (H and L), which are aligned to the edges and internal syllables of prosod...

This study proposes an Autosegmental-Metrical model of Turkish intonation based on sentences produced in neutral focus, as part of our ongoing research investigating Turkish intonational phonology. Tonal patterns of utterances were examined by varying the length of a word and a phrase, the location of stress, syntactic structures, and sentence types. Preliminary results suggest that Turkish has...
متن کاملBayesian induction of intonational phrase breaks
For the present paper, a Bayesian probabilistic framework for the task of automatic acquisition of intonational phrase breaks was established. By considering two different conditional independence assumptions, the naïve Bayes and Bayesian networks approaches were regarded and evaluated against the CART algorithm, which has been previously used with success. A finite length window of minimal mor...
